Dental Cleanings in the Annex.
Your pet’s oral health is an important part of their overall wellbeing. At The Village Vet+ Annex, Dr. Astin and our care team assess your pet’s teeth and gums to identify concerns and help you understand whether a dental cleaning is needed.
Your questions, answered.
How can I tell if my pet needs dental care?
Bad breath, red gums, drooling, dropping food or changes in chewing are reasons to book an examination. Pets may continue eating despite dental disease. A mouth check helps decide whether a cleaning or other treatment is needed.
Why does a proper dental cleaning require anaesthesia?
Anaesthesia allows us to give your pet a thorough dental cleaning that goes beyond the surface of the teeth. It lets us clean below the gum line, take dental X-rays and perform extractions if needed, while keeping your pet still and comfortable. We understand that anaesthesia can feel worrying. Dr. Astin will talk you through your pet’s individual risks and the precautions we take to make their care as safe as possible.
What is involved in a dental procedure at the Annex?
A dental procedure includes an oral examination, dental X-rays, scaling and polishing, with blood work as part of the preparation. We may also find teeth that need additional treatment or extraction. Before your pet goes under anaesthesia, our team will explain the planned procedure, what to expect and how we will keep you informed if additional care is needed.
Will my pet need teeth removed?
Not every cleaning involves an extraction. Decisions depend on the health of each tooth and its supporting tissues, often assessed with dental X-rays. Ask Dr. Astin to explain treatment options and how any additional work affects the estimate.
How do I prepare, and what happens afterward?
Follow the clinic’s food, water and medication instructions. Recovery and feeding guidance depend on whether the visit involved cleaning alone or additional treatment. Ask about pain relief, chewing restrictions, rechecks and signs that should prompt a call.
How often should my pet have a dental cleaning?
The interval depends on the health of their mouth, home care and any new or worsening signs of dental disease. Regular examinations help determine when treatment is needed. Ask about toothbrushing and appropriate dental products once your pet’s mouth is comfortable and any treated areas have healed.
Why can dental estimates vary?
Costs depend on your pet’s weight, blood work, anaesthesia, imaging, cleaning and any treatment needed below the gum line. You can request an estimate during a wellness exam. Before your pet is admitted, we will agree with you on how any additional treatment decisions will be discussed.
