Surgeries.

A recommendation for surgery can bring plenty of questions. Understanding the reason for a procedure, the alternatives and the recovery plan helps you make an informed decision. Surgical care starts with an assessment of your pet and a conversation about what treatment could mean for their comfort and health.

Everything you need to know.

How will I know if my pet needs surgery?

Your veterinarian will explain what the examination and any tests show, why surgery is being considered and how urgent the decision is. They’ll also discuss alternatives, likely benefits and what could happen if treatment is delayed. Not every problem requires an operation.

What types of surgery are available?

The Village Vet+ offers spay and neuter, soft-tissue, dental and orthopaedic surgery services. Suitability depends on the procedure and your pet's needs. Contact your clinic to confirm the available options and whether specialist referral is recommended.

What are the risks of anaesthesia?

Anaesthesia has risks, and those risks differ between patients. A preoperative assessment helps guide the plan, including any recommended tests and monitoring. Your veterinarian will take the time to review your pet’s health history and medications with you, explain the risks associated with anaesthesia and discuss the precautions we take, so you have a clear understanding of what to expect.

How should I prepare for surgery?

Follow the clinic's written instructions for food, water, medication and arrival time. These vary by patient and procedure. Call if your pet becomes unwell, eats when they were meant to fast, or if any instruction is unclear.

How will my pet be kept comfortable?

Our veterinarians will discuss how we’ll manage your pet’s comfort before, during and after the procedure, including medication to give at home. Our goal is to keep your pet comfortable and as pain-free as possible. Use only prescribed or specifically approved treatments. Contact the clinic if your pet seems uncomfortable despite the plan.

What will recovery involve?

Recovery may include restricted activity, incision protection, medication and a recheck. Our team will explain what help your pet will need at home and which signs require an urgent call.

What is included in the surgical estimate?

Our veterinarians will provide an itemized estimate covering the procedure, anaesthesia, testing, medication and follow-up. We’ll also explain how any unexpected findings or additional treatment would be discussed with you. The final estimate depends on your pet and the agreed treatment plan.
