Veterinary Surgery in the Annex.

A recommendation for surgery can bring plenty of questions. The Village Vet+ Annex offers surgical care for dogs and cats in the Annex and surrounding Toronto neighbourhoods. Understanding the reason for a procedure, the alternatives and the recovery plan helps you make an informed decision. Dr. Astin and our care team will walk you through every step.

Your questions, answered.

How will I know if my pet needs surgery?

Dr. Astin or our care team will explain what the examination and any tests show, why surgery is being considered and how urgent the decision is. They will also discuss alternatives, likely benefits and what could happen if treatment is delayed. Not every problem requires an operation.

What types of surgery are available at the Annex?

The Village Vet+ Annex offers spay and neuter, soft-tissue, dental and orthopaedic surgery services. Suitability depends on the procedure and your pet’s needs. Call us to confirm the available options and whether specialist referral is recommended.

What are the risks of anaesthesia?

Anaesthesia has risks, and those risks differ between patients. A preoperative assessment helps guide the plan, including any recommended tests and monitoring. Our team will review your pet’s health history and medications with you, explain the risks associated with anaesthesia and discuss the precautions we take, so you have a clear understanding of what to expect.

How should I prepare my pet for surgery?

Follow the clinic’s written instructions for food, water, medication and arrival time. These vary by patient and procedure. Call us if your pet becomes unwell, eats when they were meant to fast, or if any instruction is unclear.

How will my pet be kept comfortable during and after surgery?

Our team will discuss how we will manage your pet’s comfort before, during and after the procedure, including medication to give at home. Our goal is to keep your pet as comfortable and pain-free as possible. Use only prescribed or specifically approved treatments. Contact us if your pet seems uncomfortable despite the plan.

What will recovery involve?

Recovery may include restricted activity, incision protection, medication and a recheck. Our team will explain what help your pet will need at home and which signs require an urgent call.

What is included in the surgical estimate?

Our team will provide an itemized estimate covering the procedure, anaesthesia, testing, medication and follow-up. We will also explain how any unexpected findings or additional treatment would be discussed with you. The final estimate depends on your pet and the agreed treatment plan.
